V De Vendetta Movie Review
V de Vendetta is a comic book series by Alan Moore and David Lloyd that is based on the Guy Fawkes mask. It was originally published in the avant garde British comic magazine Warrior and was picked up by DC.
The story follows V, an anarchist revolutionary who uses any means possible to bring down the tyrannical government of England. He stages a coup d'état on the government's propaganda broadcasting station and straps himself with explosives to force the staff to follow his orders, then broadcasts his message to the people, encouraging them to take responsibility for themselves and rise up against their government.
Throughout the film, V never shares his real identity with anyone except for Evey Hammond; however, his character does have a unique identity. He does not have any family, friends or history; instead, he creates an idea that is powerful enough to end England's fascist regime.
Aside from the Guy Fawkes mask, V also wears a hat with a fez-like headpiece. This mask is inspired by the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, which saw a group of English Catholics lead a revolution against the English government and is regarded as one of the most significant events in English history.
When Creedy shoots V, he asks why he won't die, but V says, "Behind my mask is more than flesh; there's an idea, and ideas are bulletproof."
Despite the violence that he commits, V remains amoral in his actions; he sees no justification for killing innocent people and is dedicated to eliminating all those that oppress him. He also grooms Evey to become his replacement, someone who is morally pure and whose integrity won't be tarnished by his violent actions.
